FACULTY TESTIMONIALS
“This year was my first year participating in the Mentoring Program. I had no idea the impact this program would have on my professional development. Having regularly scheduled weekly meetings has helped me to stay on task with my writing and provided me with a group of people from whom I may get feedback. It has also given me an outlet to discuss issues that I face as a minority faculty member at UIC -- what a breadth of fresh air! It has also helped me to network and get to know other faculty and departments at UIC. I can't tell you how much this program has meant to me.”

“I have nothing but praise for the Mentoring Program and its goals. I wish I had been a part of this program starting from my first year of the tenure-track instead of my third. There were no formal workshops or introduction into planning strategies to achieve tenure for new faculty when I came to UIC. Having joined as a faculty member directly from graduate school, the workshops and writing groups would have made the transition easier and resulted in higher productivity as a junior faculty member.“

“The writing groups have been crucial to my success, and have far exceeded my expectation. My group helped me understand what keeps academics from writing. I now see that my challenges are not individual failings, but habits and responses that are widespread among faculty and often caused or exacerbated by the isolated conditions within which we work. The group has also provided me with a model for surmounting those challenges. Because we struggle through our writing alongside someone who is already successful it normalizes the challenges of the writing process. Ultimately, the group has enhanced my commitment to my department and to UIC. I’m interested in and committed to the success of my colleagues and the institution we work in to a degree I wasn’t before.”
